I used the Genesis version to examine the game. Since the other console versions are very similar, the info contained here applies to all these the versions of the game. 07-dec-01 Right now I have Kung Fu Bunny's moves and strategy. Hopefully more will be added. ABOUT THE GENESIS GAMEPLAY -------------------------- When I first played Brutal for Sega Genesis, I was very disappointed with it. It was too fast, too frenetic. In 5 or 6 seconds my character was lying on the ground, unconscious. Then I started playing it for real. I discovered that if you use the same attack over and over, without letting your enemy react, you could stand a chance. So I started doing so. The first matches were pretty easy this way, I used Kung Fu Bunny. The plan was simple, crouching hard kicks over and over. A few more belts later in the game, I realized that this technique was rendering useless. Only the first attack dealed a decent amount of damage, the following would take only a pixel of the enemy's life bar. If you observe the CPU's technique, it quite follows a pattern: Variety. If you are as creative as the CPU, you can hurt your enemy very badly. This will take some practice if you are including special moves in your style. Following that principle, the Grand Master level is even harder. It makes the fight against Dali Llama almost impossible to win. Now, only the attacks that hit your opponent while he's also attacking (a counter- attack) will inflict some damage. Some more details about the engine: Sometimes you can override any attack just by attacking in the exact moment that your opponent should hit you. If you played the game enough you surely realized that you never "trade hits" with your opponent (hit and being hit). Only one player can be hit at a time, so if both players attack each other at the same time, none of the hits will land. I discovered this fighting Ivan. He did the Earthquake move and instead of jumping, I attacked him with a random attack. Both attacks missed and the fight continued. Another strange detail: The way the players react when being hit in the air. No matter what attack hits you, if you are jumping, you fly back always at the same speed. This can be useful to escape some cheap combinations. It also can help you to get caught in a corner, so be careful with your jumping! The blocking engine: It seems that you have to press Down/Back to block, instead of just Back. You can block from any distance. Most of the attacks that knock the opponent down seem to be unblockable (like Rhei's Frenzy Attack). If they connect, they will eventually knock the enemy down, dealing very little damage. The movement: There is a little lag when performing a jump. Your character first crouches, then jumps (like in real life). This will feel odd, specially if you are a Street Fighter player. Jumping above the opponent's head (switching sides), is also a very difficult task. Most of the time your opponent must be walking towards you, crouching or lying down. Otherwise, you just push him a little. The moves: The normal moves are executed like in any fighting game. Punches or Kicks, three intensities. Special moves are harder to do than other games. There are Half Circle Forward sequences, simultaneous keypresses, direction + buttons, etc. The only strange issue here is the timing. The moves that require consecutive buttons or directions must be done with a little delay. If you do it just like the game teaches you, it won't be a big deal. Remember, in extreme situations is very hard to time the movements. I examined the Genesis version in particular, but all these details are present in the other versions. HOW TO READ ----------- LA = Light attack MA = Medium attack HA = Hard attack To perform special moves it doesn't matter if it is a punch or a kick. You will have to use attacks of the same kind, only punches or only kicks. KUNG FU BUNNY ------------- Movelist Taunt LA + MA Hi Flash Kick hold D (tap MA) Flash Kick hold MA (tap HA, HA) Double Flash Kick B, DB, D, DF, F Scissors Kick MA + HA KATAS Dance of Death hold LA, release, LA, LA Iron Fist hold HA, release, HA, HA Devil's Kiss F, DF, D, DB, B Strategy: In the earlier stages of the game, it is a good technique to use crouching Hard Kicks repeatedly, hitting your opponent as he gets up. You can alternate this with occasional jump-in attacks. When you advance through the game, you will want to use the special moves that you learned. The most useful one is the Double Flash Kick. It can knock the enemy down, and you can start the command of another one while it's being executed. With some timing, you can do a big sequence of Double Flash Kicks without letting the opponent react. Be careful, this move has lower priority than most of the enemy's attacks. You can try the same with the Scissor Kick. It will inflict a lot of damage if you do several kicks in a row, but its limited range will make the technique very difficult to perform. The only other special move that proved to be somewhat useful was the High Flash Kick, the first one you learn. You can easily alternate it with crouching Medium Kicks, just by altering the timing of the kicks. Remember, the High Flash Kick is done this way: Hold down, press MK, MK. Rhei rat seems to be resistant to sweep kicks, in some cases the Forward Hard Kick seemed to be effective, causing a lot of damage. Be careful with Ivan's Big Belly Attacks, they can knock you out in seconds. Keep jumping and use sweep kicks whenever you can. The crouching Hard Kicks can't hit foxy Roxy while she's guarding. Use crouching Hard Punches to stop most of her attacks. If you learned Double Flash Kick, you can use that too. Kendo Coyote can be a difficult fighter to beat. Combine jump-in attacks with standing and crouching Hard Kicks. If you know Double Flash Kick, use it as he gets up. If you time it right, he shouldn't be able to counter attack. Prince Leon is the easiest one. Just wait for his Swimming Attack (when he flies towards you swinging his claws). Avoid the attack by jumping over it. With some luck, he will go against a corner and fall from the bridge. You can get a perfect victory with this method. The final battle with Dali Llama. By the time you get to fight Dali, you will have a good level. Use all the techniques you used previously, but don't try the sweep kicks. He will block, the kicks won't connect, and he will counter with a Smoke Attack. Speaking of Smoke Attack... jump a lot! Don't let him hit you with that attack or you will suffer tremendous damage. If you get hit, try to jump. If he hits you in the air, you will be pushed back and land safely (except if you are trapped in a corner). A good tactic is to keep him in a corner, jump in with a Hard Punch and follow up with two or three crouching Hard Punches. You should counter any attacks he tries to do. With a lot of practice and luck, you will be able to defeat him.
